Ban Camp Chang are proud to be members of the Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) Foundation which exists to assist elephants to enjoy improved living conditions. Originally, the elephant families come from an elephant village in the Satuk District in Burrirum Province in the North East of Thailand. This land is Thailand’s oldest civilization regarding ancient remains and elephant culture. Thailand’s equivalent to Angkor Wat – Phanom Rung, lies here. Not so long ago, the elephants were used to transport produce between villages and food for them was abundant. In time, the use of elephants was replaced by cars and trucks, and the land that used to be grazed by the elephants has been cleared. With the survival and well-being of the elephants in jeopardy, the decision was made that a new home had to be found. The jungle of Koh Chang offers a natural habitat that the displaced elephants are very comfortable with. Come to see the elephants of Ban Camp Chang elephant camp, living just as they did just a few years ago in Burrirum Province.
Riding on the elephant
You will be guided onto a platform and then you will step into the cushioned seat which is securely strapped onto the back of the elephant. 2 adults can be safely and comfortably seated here. Your mahout (elephant keeper) will lead the elephant through the jungle pathways. Sometimes he will be sitting upon the neck of the elephant. At other times he may be walking ahead of the elephant. This will give you a chance to sit on the neck of the elephant, should you wish to do so. You can give your camera to the mahout and he will be only too pleased to take photographs for you. You will observe how the elephants enjoy this trek because they will have access to food from the abundant foliage along the pathways. If you take the 2 hour trek, you will see how much the elephants enjoy taking a bath in the cool clear waters along the route. You will enjoy that as much as the animals do!
