Flights between Samui (and Phuket) and Trat have been discontinued for the duration of the low season. Take care, some booking sites and agencies are selling “flights” between Trat and Samui which involve a 4 hour minivan transfer between Koh Chang and Pattaya Airport. If you want to get to Samui or Phuket from Koh Chang, then please come to see us when you are on the island.

Accommodation – Booking Before You Travel

Throughout the year it is usually quite easy to find suitable accommodation on Koh Chang upon your arrival. But, you are often arriving on the island late in the day and after a long and tiring journey and will often settle for a room that turns out to be far from ideal. Why not browse our current accommodation price list, then if you want to make a reservation inquiry, please drop us an email before you set out, and we’ll then try to fix up some suitable accommodation on the island for you. Alternatively, there are many websites offering online booking facilities including this one which our friends recently used to book their stop-over in New York. I noticed that they have a good selection of budget accommodation from all over Thailand including some nice clean places on Koh Chang that we can vouch for.

If you still have not decided where you’re going to stay when you have arrived on Koh Chang, then you can always ask your taxi driver to take you to Coco Dee Bo Tours next door to the Vmart supermarket in Chai Chet. Then, when you arrive here, we can then show you a selection of local rooms priced from 400 Baht upwards. Remember that during the busiest periods of the year – Christmas, New Year and Thai New Year (Songkran), accommodation on the island can become completely booked out, so at those times, booking ahead is recommended.

See in the new year 2012 from the top of Koh Chang

New Years Eve 2011 at the top of Koh Chang

Here’s a novel way to avoid the compulsory gala dinner on new year’s eve. Check out from your hotel for the night of 31st December, and join jungleman Raht at the top of Mount Salakphet, for an overnight camp. This New Years Eve on 31st December 2011, Mr Raht is taking a group up to the summit of Mount Salakphet, camping overnight near the 744 meter summit, the highest point on Koh Chang. Be the first on Koh Chang to see the sunrise in the year of the dragon 2012. This special trip is happening once only, and is limited in size, so book now, at 1399 Baht, including lunch, dinner (steak) and breakfast. Tents and hammocks are provided for your sleeping. Please contact us if you’d like to join Mr Raht on this adventure.

Our small hut has a new home

We gave a lot of our old wooden furniture to Oi who runs the Klong Koi Cottage resort at Bang Bao Beach. Included was the small hut that used to sit outside of our old shop on the beach. Go and visit Oi at Klong Koi and say hello to our old small hut too! Go past Bang Bao for 1KM, then you’ll find her resort half way down the beach.

Free Barbeque food tonight 11/11/11

We’re giving away free barbeque food if you come to Bee and Bo’s bar in Chai Chet tonight. We’re located next door to the vMart supermarket outside VJ Plaza on the main road.

Our shop on the beach

Sadly, following a change in ownership of the Royal Coconut Resort, we had to vacate our shop on the beach where we have been for the past 7 years. The shop has already been demolished and replaced with a slab of cement. Anyway, you’ll still be able to find us on the main road at Chai Chet, just a short walk away. The clothes shop behind has likewise gone, and Ying now has her shop on the main road too, where the Lay Lay Tong bar used to be. The Royal Coconut Resort now has a new name – The Chai Chet Beach Resort, and it still offers nice beach-side bungalows at an affordable price. Actually, the beach has been tidied up considerably by the new owners and steps have been taken to halt the serious erosion that was occurring there. Here’s a picture of the site now.

Our boat

Our boat has been at Trat boatyard for a couple of weeks. She’s had an engine and transmission overhaul and fully safety checked, and re-painted. She should be ready for private charter from 3,500 Baht daily, from next week.

Budget Snorkeling to 4 Islands

For 2011-12 we have an additional supplier for the budget snorkeling trip to 4 islands. Today we sampled this trip. All went well, we had good weather, the sea was calm en-route, and was clear at Koh Rang, Koh Yak Yai and Koh Yak Lek. Lunch and afternoon snacks were tasty thai dishes and the service and courtesy of the staff was excellent. Some excitement early on when the staff caught a 6 kilo barracuda. It was cooked on the boat during the afternoon for the staff dinner. This tour is highly recommended if you want the best snorkeling at a budget price. See our main site for details, and order in advance if you wish.
